Über das Marionettentheater, 1810.  Olivia Buttafarro

Nessun oggetto è usato a caso.

Olivia Buttafarro
Excellent, magical and imaginative this final work of the workshop directed by Frank Soehnle PIP 2010. White sheets pulled by invisible strings flying and moving the air, almost creating the illusion of a city. Eight figures placed at the edge of the stage governing the gravity of those white little pieces, detainig and then releasing them back into the air, immobilizing them. Then they lie down and embrace them, almost breathing in unison, between bodies and sheets of paper.

Italian, German, French and English are mixed in the narrative sections of this essay on the magic of puppetry based on the text of Heinrich von Kleist. A marionette directs the movements of the other actors concentrated each oe in animate and move a stone tied to a wire. The movements of the human body follows the axis of the marionette in a balanced equilibrium that gives the perception of a suspended time and space. A puppet dancing on stage backlit with a white handkerchief. A spider with bells, agile and light descends from above and interferes with the color just put down by a brush on a blank canvas in the center stage. Finally throws the color and mess it down on the canvas creating its own work of art.
--------------------------------------
No object is used at random. If it is shown because it is functional to the stage. From chairs to towels, to the media for reading the catwalks that become even meraionette, the cloth used as a blackboard to mark time, the sheets of paper. Just a puppet comes to life from the crumpled paper that is used to compose his limbs. And 'animated by each side with the actors and the invisible threads that govern it, and then returns to the field until its dismantling in many small pieces of paper. Mirrors and light emphasize the parallels between the actor and the animator put the body of the puppet. A mask, and man becomes puppet.
Paper, wood, stone, everything comes to life on stage. The matter is suspended, and suspended in a continuous game with gravity. Two skeletal puppet dall'altpo down and chasing each other in an atmosphere reminiscent of those created with art by Tim Burton. Another puppet, attached to the body of an actress, dancing with an umbrella in unison with her, light moves in space and does pirouettes and jumps up disappearing from the scene. Everything is crossed by the wonder, the balance, the testing of man and marionette movements aimed at defying the force that binds us to the ground. Because it's as if the entire show to accompany us in amazement phrase Heinrich von Kleist: "The force that lifts them into the air is greater than that which binds them to the ground."

The second show has lifted my morale! From start to finish was evident intent of poetry and the need to be staged this choir. The delicate gestures, the attention of the players towards each other, research and visual style, emphasizing the simple story that was told: a famous German dancer, in 1810, a passion for puppets and goes to study the movements, looking to grasp the beauty and technique. In short, a hymn of love to puppets, not only in the choice to use as the primary means, but also to make it the focus of the speech. On the other hand, the title is "Über das Marionettentheater"!.
Thus we see a succession of beautiful choral moments, explaining with few words (at last) the passion of the dancer for the puppet theater, in the "solo" puppets themselves (and please excuse the repetition, but I can not replace this term with puppets or dolls or puppets): winged creatures that descend from the heavens of the stage, or spiders supersnodati, or "men" with the mask. How wonderful to see operating these small works of art! Even the rocks and the leaves come alive! The actors play with their creatures, have fun, you see exactly what they feel they do.
They speak in German, French, Italian, English, languages that are likely to have spoken during their workshops here in Turin, and they carry a message. In fact, their performance is not a mere exercise in style, but a search on the concept of grace.
It is a quest that oozes visual and word choice. Just two examples: at the end of the performance, an actor, alone, maneuvering a puppet limbs thin and dark, the human form, wearing a white mask on his face. Here, in the middle of the stage, the shadows, the puppet takes off his mask and lay on the face of the actor (from which it falls!) And again, an actor is pinned to the ground with his puppet from a stone , try wriggling to break free, to soar into the air his creature, but it is an impossible task and, when another actor passes, leaves him in her arms her child fleeing.
So the question that is asked is: where does the will of man and the potential of the object where it starts? He is the man that the maneuver or the puppet who decides how to get moving?
Yes, everything seems possible, and this is confirmed by the conclusion poetic (and I ask you to go beyond the nonsense that I can write my optics. Consider that in the show said it was the right way): "When you put an object in front a convex mirror, the reflected image is where it is and then you can only revise endlessly. Similarly, the grace that one finds only in the most simple or infinity: so either in the puppet or in God. "

Über das Marionettentheater, 1810.  Olivia Buttafarro

1 ENGLISH Following Frank’s workshop really meant to me the discovery of a new approach to the world of marionettes. I really liked the idea of starting with everyday-life objects – at the beginning he made us explore the relationship between threads or ropes and various simple objects like scissors, sheets of paper and stones – to develop later a deeper understandig of his (for a beginner like me) very complicated puppets. We had total freedom to experiment movements, to find out construction secrets or simply to get acquainted with these grotesque, sometimes rude with us, often touching beings; only afterwards Frank invited us to repropose the most interesting things we had discovered. Moreover he helped each of us to improve the construction of our own puppets.
Also the work of analysis and interpretation of Kleist’s text was led with great sensibility both for the technical problems concerning marionettes as for the philosophical matters aroused in the dialogue. In general I think that every proposal was of the highest quality – materials, text, puppets, music, suggestions for improvisation, final mise en scène of the performance – and revealing a great sense of theatrical taste and a refined poetics. Althoug I experienced many difficulties, I am absoloutely enthusiastic of the workshop, where I believe to have learnt a lot. I also really liked the group of partecipants, coming from different countries and with very different theatrical experiences.

Ci siamo tutti e tutti a parlare inglese.

E' pronto Frank! E' pronto Guglielmo! E' pronto il teatro! E' pronto Kleist in tedesco, inglese, italiano e francese! C'è il pubblico in sala!

...

E poi gli applausi!!!

E' andata!!!

Bye bye international Kleist!
